Following is a list of well-known species of maple tree, many of these are ornamentals and are planted as specimen trees:
- Acer japonica
- Acer negundo. "Manitoba Maple", "Box Elder", "Ash-leaved Maple"
- Acer nipponicum
- Acer palmatum. "Japanese Maple"
- Acer rubrum. "Red Maple"
- Acer saccharum. "Sugar Maple", the main provider of maple syrup and or "hard maple" wood
- Acer nigrum. "Black Maple", less common than sugar maple, some authorities consider it a variety of sugar maple.
- Acer macrophyllum. "Bigleaf Maple" from the west coast of North America. Leaves are 15 to 30 cm across
- Acer saccharinum. "Silver Maple". Widely planted as a street tree in northeastern North America
- Acer spicatum. "Mountain Maple", small tree of northeastern North America
- Acer spicatum. "Striped Maple" or "Moosewood", small tree of northeastern North America
- Acer glabrum. "Douglas Maple", small tree or bush from the west coast of North America.
- Acer circinatum. Vine Maple, small tree or bush from the west coast of North America
