Following is a list of well-known species of maple tree, many of these are ornamentals and are planted as specimen trees:

• Acer campestris. The common European "Field Maple"
• Acer circinatum. "Vine Maple", small tree or bush from the west coast of North America
• Acer ginnala. "Amur Maple"
• Acer glabrum. "Douglas Maple", small tree or bush from the west coast of North America.
• Acer japonica
• Acer macrophyllum. "Bigleaf Maple" from the west coast of North America. Leaves are 15 to 30 cm across
• Acer negundo. "Manitoba Maple", "Box Elder", "Ash-leaved Maple"
• Acer nigrum. "Black Maple", less common than sugar maple, some authorities consider it a variety of sugar maple.
• Acer nipponicum
• Acer palmatum. "Japanese Maple"
• Acer pensylvanicum. "Striped Maple" or "Moosewood", small tree of northeastern North America
• Acer platanoides. "Norway Maple", European species widely planted as a street tree.
