The capital of the United States of America is a separate federal district and not part of any one state. Its land was ceded by Maryland and Virginia upon its creation in 1790. It controls 3 electoral votes for president and vice president.

Outlying Islands (10)

The following belong to the U.S. but are not part of any state. Except for the military forces on Wake and Kwajalein, and U.S. government employees on Midway[11], these islands are uninhabited, and many are United States Pacific Island Wildlife Refuges. A number of battles of the second World War in the Pacific were fought on them, or in waters nearby.

  9. ↑ Spain claimed Guam in 1565 and but lost it to the U.S. in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. In 1950, an act of Congress made it an unincorporated organized territory of the U.S.
  10. ↑ In a 2020 referendum in Puerto Rico, a majority voted to request admission as the 51st state of the USA. This would require ratification by Congress, which has not yet happened.
