This article is something of an experiment, as it will cover the mechanisms classically called "MAC" on local area networks, but also the methods used in medium-range radio networks including cellular telephony and military tactical nets, and the space/time/wavelength resource sharing on long-haul media such as SONET/SDH, wavelength division multiplexing, microwave polarization multiplexing, etc.
They all deal with fundamentally the same problem, but the OSI concept of the data link layer does not cover the range; some of these, in OSI terms, are clearly physical layer. It is my intention to stress the similarities rather than the differences. Howard C. Berkowitz 18:10, 28 August 2008 (CDT)
