Structure of Sulfasalazine.

Sulfasalazine (SSZ), also called sulphasalazine and sulfasalazin, is a drug used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Its official IUPAC name is (3E)-6-oxo-3-[[4-(pyridin-2-ylsulfamoyl)phenyl]hydrazinylidene]cyclohexa-1,4-diene-1-carboxylic acid and its chemical formula is C18H14N4O5S . Its effects are thought to be due to its breakdown product, 5-aminosalicylic acid (see mesalamine), which is released into the colon. It is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis
