New Delhi is the capital city of the Republic India and is and is one of the eleven districts of National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCTD).
With a population of 22 million in 2011, the NCTD region is the world's fifth most populous, the largest in India.
The city's foundation stone was set during the Delhi Durbar of 1911 by George V, Emperor of India . New Delhi was laid out by British architects, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. The new capital was inaugurated on 13 February 1931, by Lord Irwin Viceroy of India.
