Legend

A legend is a narrative historical tale, with human protagonists. It is distinguished from fable, fantasy and myth, although, as legends develop, they may acquire elements of these. A story does not have to be proven in order to be a legend, but it does have to be generally believable. Being based on specific humans who can reasonably be thought to have existed, or on known historical events, helps to distinguish legend from myth.
