In health care delivery, health literacy is the "degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions."[1]
Markers of possible impaired health literacy are self-report of:[2]
- Difficulty completing medical forms
- Difficulty reading written hospital material
- Use of someone to help you read written materials received from the hospital
It is unclear how to overcome difficulties in communicating quantitative information.[3]
