Gag order [r]: Vernacular name for a court order restricting the communications of persons specified in it. Like other court orders, it must describe the prohibited conduct precisely enough for the persons it applies to, to know what they are not allowed to do, and if they violate the order the judge may hold them in contempt of court, for which the penalty may be incarceration and/or payment of a fine.
