Barry Morris Goldwater (1909-1998) was an American politician from Arizona who was instrumental in shaping the modern conservative movement in the United States. He served as a U.S. Senator from 1953 to 1965 and from 1969 to 1987 as a member of the Republican Party, and unsuccessfully ran for president in 1964 against incumbent Lyndon Johnson. Throughout of his career, Goldwater was a staunch advocate of fiscal conservatism, states' rights and hawkish stance against communism both domestically and internationally. In his later years, however, he was largely alienated from the Republican Party due to his libertarian tendencies while the party has picked up a socially conservative platform.

His son, Barry M. Goldwater, Jr., once served as a Congressman from California. Goldwater Institute, a conservative organization in Arizona, is named after Barry Goldwater.
