Arad is a city in southern Israel, about 45 km from Beersheba and 25 km from the Dead Sea. It is home to 23,300 residents (2006 estimate). Arad is known for its clean air, and serves as an attraction to asthmatics worldwide.

History

Modern Arad was founded near the site of ancient Tel Arad in November 1962. It was the last development town and the first pre-planned city in Israel. Originally, Arad was meant to serve as a regional center for the future Arad Bloc, which would house 100,000 residents.

Economy

Arad's economy is mainly based on the Dead Sea and Tzefa factories, but also on tourism and local industry. Many of Arad's workers commute to Beersheba.
