In American English, a doghouse is a small shed, often built in the shape of a little house, in which a dog is kept or can run into for shelter from the elements. It is also called a kennel. Speakers of Commonwealth English generally do not use the word "doghouse" in this sense; they use "kennel" instead.
In America, "doghouses" are somewhat iconic. They are used extensively in cartoons and comics; Snoopy’s doghouse, for example, is featured in Peanuts.
The expression "in the doghouse" means to be in trouble; it is used of a person who is figuratively sent to the doghouse in the same way that a dog is removed from the human habitation.
