Stanford University is a major research and teaching institution located in Palo Alto, California. It is in the heart of Silicon Valley and associated with much high-technology work. The institution was created with an endowment from Leland Stanford, and was named for his deceased son, Leland Stanford Jr. It opened in 1891, admitting both male and female students.

The Hoover Institution, an conservative think tank, is on the campus.

As opposed to many other colleges highly regarded for their academics, Stanford is also a strong force in intercollegiate athletics.
