The Oakland Athletics are a Major League Baseball team based in Oakland, California. The team began in Philadelphia in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics, as one of the inaugural teams in the American League. The Athletics then moved to Kansas City in 1955 and to Oakland in 1968.

The team has had a total of 9 championship-winning seasons in the modern era (1901 and later) of major-league baseball, winning the World Series in 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, 1930, 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1989. They were also American League champions, but lost in the World Series, 5 times, in 1905, 1914, 1931, 1988, and 1990. Prior to the start of the modern World Series in 1903, the team won the American League title in 1902, the league's second year. [3]
