Vipera echis is a scientific name proposed by Schlegel in 1837. It was used to describe a venomous viper found in the deserts of North Africa, the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent. However, this name has long since been considered a synonym of the following two species:

  • External Article Echis carinatus: Venomous viper species of the genus Echis, found in parts of the Middle East, Central Asia, and especially the Indian subcontinent. [e]
  • Developing Article Echis pyramidum: Venomous viper species of the genus Echis, found mainly in north-east Africa, but also in parts of the Arabian Peninsula. [e]
