San Antonio-class Landing Platform Docks are large amphibious warfare vessels of the U.S. Navy. They are the secondary aviation platform for an Amphibious Ready Group, and the primary carriers for the large Landing Craft Air Cushion and Landing Craft Utility. Since the landing craft are slower and have a shorter range than helicopters and tilt-rotor transports, the LPD operates closer to shore than the primary aviation ship, the LHA or LHD.
