Ancient sources

Project Gutenburg hosts a free early 20th-century translation of Pliny the Younger's letters, including his account of Vesuvius' eruption [1]. A more recent translation can be found in Cooley & Cooley, Pompeii: a sourcebook, from page 32 onward [2].
