From Greek mythology, he was the son of king Agamemnon and queen Clytemnestra. When his father is murdered by Clytemnestra's lover Aigisthos, Orestes avenges his father's murder by killing both Aigisthos and Clytemnestra, according to Elizabeth Vandiver, Classics scholar and authority on Greek mythology and Greek tragedy including the Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, Homer, and Virgil. This definition is based on her course Classical Mythology from The Teaching Company.
