In American English, a doghouse is a small shed, often built in the shape of a little house, in which a dog is kept or can run into for shelter from the elements. It is also called a kennel. Speakers of Commonwealth English generally do not use the word "doghouse" in this sense, they use "kennel" instead.

In America, “doghouses” are somewhat iconic. They are used extensively in cartoons and comics; Snoopy’s doghouse, for example, is featured in Peanuts.

The expression "in the doghouse" means to be in trouble; it is used of a person who is figuratively sent to the doghouse in the same way that a dog is removed from the human habitation.
