Its been a long time, but when last I played WoW, Gnomeregan was in ruins, and the surviving Gnomes had fled to Ironforge to live with the Dwarves. :Actually the Gnomes are in the middle of retaking Gnomeregan [http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/underdev/3p9/gnomeregan.xml]. They still consider it their capital, even if they don't currently live there, and within the next 6 months (probably less) it will be retaken. - Actually the Gnomes are in the middle of retaking Gnomeregan [1]. They still consider it their capital, even if they don't currently live there, and within the next 6 months (probably less) it will be retaken.
