Brought up in rural England, Katy is the daughter of a social worker and a teacher, both of whom were very active for many years in the Labour Party. She took a BA (Hons) in Classical Civilisation from the University of Birmingham, and more recently she took a further course with the Open University, to improve the standard of her Ancient Greek.

She has had a lifelong interest in esoterica and alternative medicine, in which fields she has taken courses and, occassionally, worked. In the last few years, she has had a keen interest in scepticism. She feels this makes her perspective quite balanced on these issues.

She is also learning dressmaking and occassionally writes poetry. She is a mother of two young boys.
