Jon Pertwee

Jon Pertwee (7th July 1919 - 20th May 1996) was an English actor, best known as the third to take on the lead role in the British science fiction series Doctor Who, from 1970 to 1974, and as the title character in the Worzel Gummidge children's series (1979-1981). Prior to being cast as 'the Doctor' in 1969, Pertwee had been best known as a comedy actor; his more serious style in Doctor Who came as a marked contrast to his previous film and television career. During World War II, Pertwee worked in naval intelligence, tasked with spying on subversive theatrical productions; Pertwee later recalled that he made a "very bad spy", even joining the cast of one production he was supposed to report.
