Cherry Street bridge over the Keating Channel (2021)
There have been a series of bridges spanning the Keating Channel, at Cherry Street, with the 2021 bridge being designed to carry northbound and southbound streetcars, with a second bridge, built in 2022, carrying vehicles and pedestrians.
The two recent bridges will replace a lift bridge built in 1968. All earlier bridges were lift bridges or swing bridges, as the Keating Channel once served industrial purposes that required mooring larger vessels.
The two new bridges are located approximately 100 meters west of the older bridge as the southern portion of Cherry Street is being realigned as part of the construction of Villiers Island.
Other bridges will serve serve Villiers Island, including where Cherry Street crosses a new outlet for the Don River, at Polson, and an east-west bridge spanning the Don River at Commissioner Street. All the bridges share the same design.
