Hypertension is a multisystem disease whose hallmark is the elevation of blood pressure.

Several randomized controlled trials have compared initial medications for hypertension.[1][2][3][4]

Current practice guidelines are based on The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7).[5]
