Karl Mummenthey was an SS-Obersturmbannfuehrer in the WVHA, who, as chief Chief of Office 1 (Minerals in the Reich) in WVHA Amtsgruppe W managed the SS-owned Deutsche Erd- und Steinwerke GmbH (DEST, German Earth and Stone Works Company. DEST operated, using slave labor, the quarries, brickworks and mining and factories in concentration camps. After Allied bombings intensified, some of the mining facilities were converted to undergound factories. [1]
Major DEST projects included:
- Stone quarries at Mauthausen-Gusen, Flossenburg, Natzweiler, as well as Gross Rosen Concentration Camp
- Brick manufacturing plants at Sachsenhausen and Buchenwald Concentration Camp
He was convicted in the Pohl Case (NMT). Originally, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, but the sentence was commuted to 20 years.
