This article was used as the basis for a discussion, although not a formal debate, in the Science and Religion workshop series at the Unitarian-Universalist Meeting House, Chatham, Massachusetts, on 11 January 2010. The format was:

  1. Group reading, each person doing a paragraph, of Clarke's "The Star"; followed by discussion
  2. Discussion on each major heading (e.g., what is it to be human?)
  3. Group reading, each person doing a paragraph, of Clarke's "The Nine Billion Names of God"; followed by discussion
