Hendra virus, first identified in Australia in 1999, is a zoonotic virus that can cause disease in humans and animals.[1] it is an overlap agent under the Select Agent Program due to high lethality and a wide range of susceptible hosts.
Several zoonotic and vectorborne viral diseases have emerged, since the mid-1990s, in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific, the first being Hendra virus, formerly called equine morbillivirus.[2]
