Naval guns are long-barreled cannon carried by warships. The classic role of such guns was to fight other warships, with secondary roles of destroying merchant ships or shore bombardment. With the advent of guided missiles, guns are largely obsolete for ship-to-ship combat, although advanced designs continue to be developed for attacking land targets.
