Oregon is one of 50 states that comprise the United States of America. Admitted to the union on 14 February 1859, Oregon originally spanned - as the Oregon Territory - the vast areas of Washington and Idaho. Oregon is the only state to have a two-sided flag; that is, the obverse of the flag, emblazoned with the Great Seal of the State of Oregon, is not mirrored on the reverse, where instead the Oregon flag holds a beaver, the state's official state animal. Furthermore, it is one of only two states in the country that does not have a statewide sales tax.
