 Definition:  UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (2002) defined culture as "... the set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features of a society or a social group..." that "encompasses, in addition to art and literature, lifestyles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs". A modest start

Between 2000-4 as a policy-maker I had to grapple with definitions of 'culture' in drafting London's inaugural culture strategy. I place a modest counter down by including some of the text we in London came to use; just to kick off this article.

Anyone willing to expand this article? I don't feel qualified to myself, but as at the moment it consists entirely of external quotes, it would seem to be a candidate for deletion. John Stephenson 04:37, 9 July 2008 (CDT)
