Apple Inc. is an American company that primarily specializes in the creation of software, computers, and consumer electronics; most notably the Mac OS X operating system, Macintosh computers, and the iPod. Founded on April 1, 1976 in California as Apple Computer, Inc., Apple removed the "Computer" from its name in January 2007 to reflect the company's diversification into consumer electronics markets. Apple has long benefited from an unusually high level of consumer affiliation and product loyalty, although it has had its fair share of scandals including the highly publicized and long running legal battles with Apple Records, and the recent Stock Option backdating scandal.
