Alexandria, Virginia
Alexandria, Virgina is a city in northern Virginia.[1] It was founded in 1749.
Alexandria lies on the Potomac River, and the river was deep enough to accommodate 18th century sailing ships.[1] After local merchants used landfill to construct wharves near the river's deep channel the city became a major river port. The city's history page asserts that, at the end of the 18th century, Alexandria was one of the ten busiest ports in the United States. However, it was then superceded by Baltimore, Maryland.
From 1789 to 1847 The District of Columbia was a square parcel of land, including land on the Southern, Virginia side of the Potomac. Alexandria fell within the Virginia portion of the District.[1]
Alexandria was captured very early during the American Civil War.[1] The Union made Alexandria the Capitol of the seven Virginia counties under their control.
