Technical writing is a communications and technical discipline for communicating the ideas of developers and the rules of technical product behavior to a user audience. The term technical communications is used increasingly, to point out that the products of technical writer can be multimedia, interactive tutorials and help, etc. It often provides training materials and calls on the skills of instructional system development.
One major professional organization, the Society for Technical Communication, defines its key attributes as "any form of communication that exhibits one or more of the following characteristics:[1]
- Communicating about technical or specialized topics, such as computer applications, medical procedures, or environmental regulations.
- Communicating by using technology, such as web pages, help files, or social media sites.
- Providing instructions about how to do something, regardless of how technical the task is or even if technology is used to create or distribute that communication.
