I don't think long ess was a separate letter; just a typographical variant used in certain positions, rather like the two sigmas in Greek.
It seems ratyher arbitrary to count those two ligatures as part of The English alphabet, but not diaeresis, for example. Is there some definite criterion in use here? Peter Jackson 09:25, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
