This page lists the different types of Diabetes. All types of diabetes are characterized by excessive urination (polyuria). In diabetes insipidus, the urination is due to insufficient effect of antidiuretic hormone. In the other types of diabetes, the urination is due to high blood levels of glucose. The glucose functions as a diuretic and causes the kidneys to urinate.

  • Diabetes insipidus is characterized by frequent excretion of large amounts of dilute urine, and excessive thirst as a result of decreased effect of antidiuretic hormone (ADH).
  • Diabetes mellitus type 1 is identified by decreased insulin levels as a result of deficiency or loss of efficiency of the insulin-producing beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas.
  • Diabetes mellitus type 2 is the result of decreased efficiency of the body's transfer of insulin across the cell membrane and results in elevated blood insulin and glucose levels.
  • Gestational diabetes is characterised as increased blood insulin and glucose levels that occurs only during pregnancy as a result of hormonal changes that cause resistance to insulin. This is not the same as Pregnancy of Diabetics which is when a previously diagnosed diabetic becomes pregnant.
