The United States Department of Defense is a Department of the United States Government.[1][2] The United States Secretary of Defense is the holder of a cabinet portfolio. The Secretary is responsible for four armed services, the United States Navy; the United States Army; the United States Air Force; and the United States Marine Corp.
In 1947 the Department superceded the War Department. The Secretary of Defense superceded the Secretary of War. The War Department was one of the three original cabinet level departments created by the first United States Congress in 1789.[3]
