Pepper is used to mean two different food items:

• Black pepper, a seasoning derived from green fermented berries of Piper nigrum.
• White pepper, a seasoning derived from mature dried berries of Piper nigrum.
• Bell pepper or Chili pepper: the fruit of various plants of the genus Capsicum, used fresh as a vegetable or dried and ground as a spices known as Paprika (mild) and Cayenne pepper (hot) also known as Red pepper or Chili powder.
• Sichuan pepper or Szechuan pepper: a seasoning made from the husks of the dried fruits of one or other tree of the genus Zanthoxylum. In Chinese it's huājiāo 花椒 or shānjiāo 山椒.
