Intro

I have changed the lead, which was a poor description. We do not need to reference for such basic concepts.

The remaining gaps

I believe that I have repaired some of the deficiencies in the article of June 2010, but I am aware that others remain. Nothing has been said about foreign policy, defence, crime, or immigration, to mention a few. I am not at all sure about what should be said about any of those, so I will now leave it to others to add whatever is considered appropriate.

Extent

The information I've added on the exact extent of the EU certainly belongs somewhere in the cluster, though not necessarily where I've put it. Note also that I haven't properly verified it as the links in Wikipedia aren't working. They do have an air of plausibility here, though. The map is not always clear or up to date. Map

In my view, no map at all would be better than an out-of-date one. I suggest removing it if no one brings us a new one. (I don't know how to do that technical stuff; my experience of dealing with pictures is confined to copying from one Wikipedia page to another.) UK referendum

Wikipedia has gone for "United Kingdom European Union membership referendum, 2016", but that doesn't give much prominence to the year, and ignores Gibraltar's participation. John Stephenson (talk) 15:15, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

Well, Gibraltar is part of the UK for EU purposes, not a separate member. Similarly, Greenland used to count as part of Denmark-as-EU-member, but left as a result of a referendum. Peter Jackson (talk) 09:57, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

It got in by virtue of being a British territory within continental Europe, but it is distinct from the UK's status due to being outside various policies and the internal market. It is not particularly clear what would happen if the UK left. Having said that, it is not necessary to complicate the title. John Stephenson (talk) 13:58, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

There are various other examples of such variable meanings of a country name. Three different meanings of France are found in different sources, and three different meanings of the USA are found in different official US government sources (Wikipedia recently finished (for now anyway) a lengthy dispute on this). Hungary

The European Parliament voted that H is not a "full democracy" any more , but an "electoral autocracy": [1]. I think this should be in the article somewhere, but I can't find anywhere it says the EU believes in democracy. Peter Jackson (talk) 04:46, 16 September 2022 (CDT)
