Henry III (1216-1272) was an Angevin monarch who succeeded his father John to the throne. His reign was marred by Civil war and conflict with the influential nobleman Simon De Montfort, but he has also been noted for his piety. Historians have often compared the Kings brother Richard of Cornwall with King Richard I and the King himself with King John, as both men were differing personalities of note. He was succeeded by his powerful son Edward I in 1272.
