Welcome, new editor! We're very glad you've joined us. Here are pointers for a quick start. Also, when you get a chance, please read The Editor Role. You can look at Getting Started and our help system for other introductory pages. It is also important, for project-wide matters, to join the Citizendium-L (broadcast) mailing list. Announcements are also available via Twitter. You can test out editing in the sandbox if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the forum is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals. You can ask any administrator for help, too. Just put a note on their "talk" page. Again, welcome and thank you! We appreciate your willingness to share your expertise, and we hope to see your edits on Recent changes soon. --Larry Sanger 08:00, 21 July 2007 (CDT)
Your articles
Hi Ian, just checking to make sure that these are not wikipedia articles that you have imported. If they are, don't forget to check the box in the bottom of the edit page. If they are all yours, you could leave a message at the very top of the article so nobody will ask you again! Thanks, --Matt Innis (Talk) 15:05, 25 July 2007 (CDT)
Good news! That makes it easier. CZLive means that we are actively working on it (even if it was imported from wikipedia). Just add, "I started this article from scratch here at Citizendium." to the sentence that you have at the top of the talk page. That should make it quite clear to anyone that happens along. You are fast!! --Matt Innis (Talk) 15:14, 25 July 2007 (CDT)
Help
Hi Ian. I saw your post here. Good point. In the meantime, here is the magic link: CZ:Project Home#Policy. —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 11:40, 27 July 2007 (CDT)
- Great update for me, at least, and others I hope. I am using the new Help template link a lot at present. Thanks. --Ian Johnson 11:51, 28 July 2007 (CDT)10:18, 28 July 2007 (CDT)
Gay (word)
Ian, many thanks for your kind words about my contributions. But I fear that the good work has been muddled by the last batch of edits; I am trying very hard to get the article reverted to its earlier state so that I can build on the earlier material, retain the headers, and give a fuller and more accurate account of the word's linguistic and political history. I'd appreciate your input as to your views on this on the article's Talk page. All best, Russell Potter 20:53, 28 July 2007 (CDT)
Les moules frites
Miam, miam! Also carbonnades a la flamande! Hayford Peirce 14:12, 29 July 2007 (CDT)
- Unfortunately I haven't been there since 1953. My cousin lives there, however, on rue St. Quentin. The NYT had a long article a couple of months ago about wonderful Brux. restaurants, including Comme Chez Soi. The July 8th NYT has an article about Brux. with a mention of rabbit stew at Les Brassins, and Moules Frites at Aux Armes de Bruxelles, also Au Vieux Bruxelles; for Royale Cuisine, the Museum Brasserie.... Hi Larry - just a thought. As CZ grows, can there be at the top and bottom of each of the contents 'Live articles' index pages a hyperlinked "A-B-C-D-E...W-X-Y-Z" that would allow people to use it as a quick way to jump around quickly within that list to reach more quickly that part of the list for the subject they are wanting to search for? --Ian Johnson 07:53, 29 July 2007 (CDT)

New Article of the Week
I have voted for Gay community - you can also vote for your own article! John Stephenson 10:58, 8 August 2007 (CDT)
- I just fixed your sugpages for gay community. I'm not sure of what your tried before but i moved the metadata page to the correct location at Template:Gay community/Metadata. I also added the subpages template to the talk page. Also note that there is no need to add categories if you use the subpages templates. Everhtiong is done automatically by reading the status from the metadata page. Otherwise everthing looked OK. Chris Day (talk) 13:41, 15 August 2007 (CDT)
Casse croute
I wouldn't mind eating an English Breakfast -- for dinner, once in a while, if someone else would cook it for me. Until then, I'm gonna eat a la francaise, with occasional deviations into Italian, Chinese, American, and Thai.... Hayford Peirce 17:19, 31 August 2007 (CDT)
Party!
Just a reminder that when you wake, you're invited to a party--the write-a-thon is on and so far I'm the only one here! Aleta Curry 17:40, 4 September 2007 (CDT)
Party, Part Deux
Where are you? Is it still, like, night in Europe? Aleta Curry 00:36, 3 October 2007 (CDT)
- Hey Aleta, I am here. Fashionably late. Heavy heavy work commitments recently, but I gladly brought the party with me! --Ian Johnson 03:06, 3 October 2007 (CDT)
- Good on ya, bro! See you're ready to hit the local disco, too! Sweet! Aleta Curry 05:22, 3 October 2007 (CDT)
Abba
Hello, Ian. As I am being ignored by the fanatics on Wikipedia, and we at CZ are at least trying to be experts...
At the height of their popularity (when I used to read the New Musical Express), and today on video TV channels like VH1, the group (showing my age - band??) were and are known in English as 'Abba', not 'ABBA'. In Swedish, yes, 'ABBA' (on the sleeves with the first B reversed, frequently) but we are not writing in Swedish, and part of the history of the group, it could be argued, is that they became 'Abba' in English, apparently without any objection from A, B, B or A themselves.
So please consider changing to 'Abba'. Thanks. Robert Thorpe 10:59, 13 October 2007 (CDT)
- Hi Robert, thanks for your note re ABBA-- will dig a bit and look into it. Feel free to edit accordingly if you have not done so. You can always leave a note on the article talk page too if you think someone else might see things differently of course. Sorry for my long absence on CZ - work, work, etc, etc... Your note perhaps makes some sense given the ubiquitous extent to which ABBA / Abba was around in pop culture back then (I grew up in Australia where it was unbelievable to witness).
- I guess the best approach might be to follow the most generally accepted approach in media that is out there from the time, and now too. If now is different to then I suppose we should go with what is most 'done' in reporting now as opposed to then. The whole topic makes me think back to those very different times quite nostalgically. Anyway, as with all at The Citizendium, 'rewrite away'. My editor expertise derives from the area of gay marketing not from music, so the points you made about name vs acronym could well hold sway. --Ian Johnson 09:51, 22 October 2007 (CDT)
- Just checked the official site and they seem to go with ABBA rather than Abba, so I guess the all caps version is the current best option. was good to revisit that site in any case. --Ian Johnson 10:02, 22 October 2007 (CDT)
Yes, well, they'll always be 'Abba' to me. The upper case version looks HUGE - and it requires the logo's reversed B symmetry. The times they are a(lways)-changin' - Robert Thorpe 10:16, 22 October 2007 (CDT)
- Me too - I think (not sure though now) that when I started that article I went with "Abba" but someone in the delirious madness of the monthly Write-a-thon "uppered the case". --Ian Johnson 10:19, 22 October 2007 (CDT)
But...but...but--you're not coming to the party?
The write-a-thon ain't the same without you. Where be you? Aleta Curry 15:03, 7 November 2007 (CST)
- Alack and alas -- my work has consumed me today as I have a conference presentation next week. I may start an article called Frustration. Grrrrr!! Thanks much for looking for me though Aleta - I really missed the party. The Odd Couple indeed!-- who said an encyclopedia couldn't be camp!?!! I will be back... --Ian Johnson 17:50, 7 November 2007 (CST)
Hi Ian
Hi Ian. Just dropping in to say that and that the press release you penned was simply model, and thanks. :-) Stephen Ewen 02:54, 8 November 2007 (CST)
- First of many good news items I want to work on getting out there! Thanks for the nice feedback. Much appreciated. --Ian Johnson 06:37, 18 November 2007 (CST)
Dance
I edited the introduction about dance in the article on dance. You wrote about nightclubs. But i would like you to take a look at the subject i wrote, because it would be very useful if you commented on it's clarity. Micha van den Berg 22:08, 22 November 2007 (CST)

I actually wrote that article from my head. I have a tendency to connect mental ideas to images; so i had no problem finding enough information to us. But most of the theory came from books and magazines. Someone at a future date will need to find the related literature in English in order to add notes.
I see one mistake you made, and i think i will spend a few minutes thinking about a better combination of words to express the information in. If you ever need help with translations you can ask me. Micha van den Berg 10:42, 1 December 2007 (CST)
Where the ??? is my dance partner???!!
Have you forgotten the write-a-thon?? Ian, Ian, Ian--what's up with that?? Aleta Curry 01:35, 5 December 2007 (CST)
- Just getting coffee into the turbo boosters. Seriously though, have to go visit a lady in a nursing home for Christmas later, but plan to get back here later. Stay cool in all that heat. Are you getting any rain? I could send you some... --Ian Johnson 01:40, 5 December 2007 (CST)
Brandy
Hi -- I think duck a l'orange is a *great* Xmas meal. I've done duck several times myself for Xmas, mostly a Chinese smoked tea duck, but I love duck a l'orange, although only when it's done correctly, so that the skin is super crispy. In any case, "brandy" is just a generic name for what is generally considered to be "cognac". Real cognac is a brandy by definition, but then, I suppose, so are other "eau de vies". If you make cognac, say, in Australia or the States, in exactly the same manner as it's made in France, legally you aren't supposed to call it "cognac" -- so "brandy" is used instead. Like "sparkling wine" or "methode champagnoise" are used instead of "Champagne" on the non-French items. Bon appetit! Hayford Peirce 10:29, 15 December 2007 (CST)
- I'm guessing your living in Holland? The Dutch word for Brandy is "Brandewijn". Infact the English word is derived form the Dutch, the direct translation means 'Burnt wine'. As Hayford says, cognac and brandy are the same really. Derek Harkness 10:53, 15 December 2007 (CST)
Party!
Sooo....where's my favourite Aussie?
The write-a-thon is on, Ian, and you already know that it ain't the same without you! Aleta Curry 21:00, 5 February 2008 (CST)
- Alack and alas -- work had me running research groups in England all week, and when not doing that was either holed up in hotels or in transit. In the words of the Governator -- "I'll be back!" --Ian Johnson 10:25, 10 February 2008 (CST)
June is bustin' out all over
Okay, well, maybe not in Oz--we're freezing. And it's raining. But it should be nice by you. And the write-a-thon is on--are you swamped by work again? Aleta Curry 04:25, 4 June 2008 (CDT)
- Yes. But made it here to get a gay Olympics article stub commenced. --Ian Johnson 16:48, 4 June 2008 (CDT)
