In Brief

Tennis is a game played by either two (singles) or four(doubles)players on a rectangular court. Equipment required for play includes one tennis racket per player and one tennis ball (most games start with three balls on-hand, though only 1 is in play at once). The object of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that, after it bounces once within the boundaries (which are different for singles and doubles, to be specified later), bounces a second time before the other player can hit it,hits a wall outside of the court, or is hit back into the net or out of your own side's boundaries (players may hit the ball before it bounces. This is called a volley). Points are not counted 1-2-3-4 etc., but 0(also called love)-15-30-40, with a player winning if he or she scores a point while he or she has a score of 40. A tennis game must be won by two, and if both players have 40, the score is referred to as deuce, at which point you must score two in a row to win.
