Folic acid is required for a normal pregnancy, and reduces the level of blood homocysteine, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Tetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase inhibitors block the metabolism of folic acid. This is a desirable effect for treating certain cancers and autoimmune diseases including asthma and some forms of arthritis.
