Alert, Nunavut, is the northernmost settlement on Earth.[1][2] It is 817 kilometres south of the North Pole, near the northern tip of Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada. Alert is located at 82N 62W.
Most residents are military or scientific staff, on rotation. The population peaked at approximately 200 in the 1980s.[2]
There is another scientific settlement slightly south of Alert on the coast of Ellesmere Island -- Eureka, Nunavut, at 80N 86W.
A civilian settlement, Grise Fiord, is located on the south coast of Ellesmere Island, at 76N 82W.
