Cyprus is an island in the eastern Mediterranean, formerly a British colony. Today it is divided into two political entites, the mainly Greek-speaking Republic of Cyprus, which is a member of the European Union, and the mainly Turkish-speaking Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is recognised only by Turkey.
