James began his piano studies at the age of four and violin studies at the age of seven. At the age of eight, Chang performed Mozart's Concerto No. 19 (1st mvt.) and received a standing ovation. He made his solo debut at the age of 10 performing an hour-long classical program in front of an audience of 300. His most recent awards include winning 1st place in the piano division of the 2007 Bach Festival Young Artists Competition at Rollins College and 2nd place overall. Other awards included 1st in Jacksonville's Competition for Outstanding Young Pianists, 1st place in both piano solo and piano concerto in the 2006 Greater Jacksonville Piano Competition. Currently, he is studying Fantasia by Benjamin Lees, Ondine (the first piece from Gaspard de la Nuit: Trois Poèmes pour Piano d'apres Aloysius Bertrand) by Maurice Ravel, Ballade No. 4 by Frederic Chopin, and Concerto No. 2 in F Minor, 1st mvt. also by Frederic Chopin. In addition to learning piano, he is also an advanced violinist and is currently learning Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor, 1st mvt. James is studying piano with Myrtle Edwards and Peggy Fleming, while studying violin with former semi-finalist of the Paganini International Violin Competition, Aaron Krosnick. He is also a violinist in the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra (www.jaxsymphony.org/jsyo).
His interests include studying music (especially orchestral scores such as Stravinsky's orchestral works), computer technology, Chinese medicine, and other subjects.
