The Atlanta Braves are a Major League Baseball team based in Atlanta, Georgia. Originally known as the Boston Red Stockings, the team was one of the inaugural teams in the National League in 1876. [1] [2] Prior to this, the Red Stockings had been a team in the National Association from 1871 to 1875. [3]
Championships
The team has had a total of 4 championship-winning seasons in the modern era (1901 and later) of major-league baseball, winning the World Series in 1914, 1957, 1995, and 2021. They were also National League champions, but lost in the World Series, 6 times, in 1948, 1958, 1991, 1992, 1996, and 1999. [4]
Prior to the start of the modern World Series in 1903, the team won 8 National League titles, in 1877, 1878, 1883, 1891, 1892, 1893, 1897, and 1898. They won a 19th-century version of the World Series in 1892. In 1892 the National League played a so-called "split season" in which the team with the best record in either the first or second half of the regular season played the other half-season winner for the overall championship. There was no World Series played in their other league-championship years of the 19th century.
