Psi

Psi is a term used in parapsychology for phenomena, experiences and events that appear to be related to the psyche or mind, and which cannot be explained by established physical principles. Psi-related phenomena include: telepathy, clairvoyance (remote viewing), psychokinesis (telekinesis, mind-over-matter), psychic healing (energy healing, therapeutic touch, contact and non-contact energy healing), out-of-body experiences, poltergeists and Instrumental TransCommunication. Psi, psychic, and psychical are synonyms.

Types of phenomena

• Extra-sensory perception: Abbreviated ESP; includes telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition and presentiment. This term is used to describe the acquisition of information with other then the five physical senses.
• Clairvoyance: A more popular term for this is remote viewing. It refers to the acquisition of information at a distance.
• Precognition: Mentally obtaining information about future events; premonitions.
• Presentiment: In parapsychological experiments, test subjects might display physiological changes prior to experience.
• Telepathy: ESP in the form of mind-to-mind communication.
• Psi: Parapsychological phenomena which include ESP and mind-matter interaction. Psi, psychic, and psychical are synonyms.
• Intentionality: The influence of intention on the psi field
• Mind-Matter Interaction: More commonly known as psychokinesis (PK) and telekinesis. Levitation is an older term that has essentially the same meaning. These terms describe observed phenomena indicating mental interaction with physical objects.
• Animal Psi: Abbreviated Anpsi; The demonstration of Psi in animals.
• Direct Mental Interactions with Living Systems: Abbreviated DMILS; This relates to both direct and distant energy healing.
• Near death experience: Abbreviated NDE; sometimes reported by people who were revived after being near death or clinically dead. Comonly reported experiences in a NDE include feeling great peace, OBE, seeing lights and reunions with loved ones.
• Out-of-body experience: Abbreviated OBE; the sense of being separated from the body, often includes the perspective of seeing the body and activity around it.
• Reincarnation: Rebirth into a lifetime; the belief that a person has had and is able to remember previous lifetimes.
• Haunting: The presence of a discarnate personality which may or may not be interactive; A group of reported effects including apparitions, sounds, movement of objects.
• Place Memory: the concept that places, bound by a building or not, retain impressions of people and events of the past.
• Poltergeist: A German term for "Playful spirit"; Large-scale PK phenomena historically attributed to discarnate personalities. Current thought is that the phenomena are caused by a living person or group of people, most frequently a child.

Psi mediated

The question as to how psi might be propagated through the environment remains an open question. In parapsychology, the concept of propagation or travel through and/or in is referred to as "mediated." Models that have been considered include:

• Electromagnetic Models
• Energy Field Models
• Zero-Point Field Model
• Quantum Mechanical Models

Mundane explanations

Alternative explanations for phenomena attributed to psi include Misperception, misinterpretation, inaccurate recall of individual experiencers or chance.

Data reported from experiments might be explained as artifacts of procedural flaws, a freak outcome of chance, other inappropriate assumptions about sampling or a product of fraud. These explanations are to some extent supported by the relatively low level of replicability of the data and the lack of a definitive psi experiment immune to claims of actual or potential methodological deficiencies.

Transcommunication

When Psi phenomena is thought to be from a discarnate personality, it is referred to as crossing an hypothetical psi-physical interface. This is commonly referred to with the prefix of "trans-" and when it is seen as communication, it is referred to as transcommunication.

A major component of reported paranormal phenomena is an apparent transmission of information by means not currently explained with known physical principles. In many instances, this transmission of information is seen as intelligent communication. The main characteristics of this communication is that it has been seen to be nonlocal--not specific to one place or time--and subject to the influence of intention. Transcommunication can be defined as: A trans-etheric influence that is intended to be communication. Not all trans-etheric influences are considered communication. Some, such as what is thought to be residual energy phenomena may simply happen without regard to who is experiencing the event.

Professor Ernst Senkowski coined the term, Instrumental TransCommunication or ITC, to describe meaningful anomalies including extraordinary voices, computer text, recorded images and images found on video displays suggestive of a continuance of life after death. Note that, in this context, After Death Communication (ADC) and mediumship would be considered subsets of transcommunication.

There are three theories commonly used to explain such paranormal experiences as anomalous voices and images in recording media, hauntings phenomena and mediumship. Always the first that should be considered is a suite of possible explanations which involve only normal phenomena. These include mundane artifacts mistaken as paranormal, fraud and illusion. If any of these explain the report, then it is not considered transcommunication.

If there is no known mundane explanation, the Super-psi Hypothesis is the next most common explanation. Super-psi proposes that every object, thought and action has a subtle-energy signature which is retained in an ubiquitous subtle energy field. these phenomena are caused by information that has been somehow recorded into a subtle-energy aspect of reality and which are able to be detected by our senses and instruments. In other words, these experiences are only memories or echoes of the past. The Survival Hypothesis has been proposed for reported experiences that appear to be interactive communication. This hypothesis proposes that people are really an etheric personality entangled with a physical body for the purpose of a lifetime, and that when the body dies, the personality continues to exist in a nonphysical aspect of reality and is able to communicate back “into” the physical. The ATransC has adopted a working version of the Survival Hypothesis referred to as the Trans-survival Hypothesis as the theory thought to best explain the evidence. For the study of these phenomena, the “trans-“ prefix is used to mean “across the veil,” between the physical and etheric aspects of reality. Haunting phenomena, both mental and physical mediumship, psi phenomena such as psychokinesis, clairvoyance (remote viewing) and energy healing, and the phenomena we find in audio and visual recording media are all forms of transcommunication.

• Because of common use in this field, terms with a "trans-" prefix can be used without the hyphen.
