Context matters: If it were not camouflaged in the colour of the surrounding leaves, the mantis could easily fall prey to a vertebrate predator. Yet in the presence of the mantis, the similarly impressive camouflage of the grasshoppers may not be sufficient to save both their lives on this occasion.
