Led Zeppelin, issued on 29 October 1990, is a digitally remastered boxed set of English rock group Led Zeppelin's notable songs on four compact discs, six vinyl albums ,and four cassette formats. Remastering of the compiled material was undertaken at Sterling Sounds, New York, in May 1990. The CD and vinyl formats also included a 36-page booklet with band photographs and liner notes by blues historian Robert Palmer, journalist Cameron Crowe, and Kurt Loder.
Overview
The box-set touches on every Led Zeppelin release, bar the live collection The Song Remains the Same. Jimmy Page determined the set's running order, taking the songs out of their familiar contexts and placing them in a new sequence. As with Coda, this release contains previously unissued tracks, in the form of "Travelling Riverside Blues", recorded on 24 June 1969 at the BBC Maida Vale Studio, and "White Summer", recorded at the Playhouse Theatre, London on 27 June 1969. There was also a mix featuring "Moby Dick"/"Bonzo's Montreux" mix, which was completed at the Atlantic Synclavier Suite in New York, in May 1990.
To differentiate this release from the previous Remasters box set, global recording industry associations have often certified this under the title The Complete Collection (which should not to be confused with the later 1993 release The Complete Studio Recordings).
Symbols
At each of the four corners of the box set there is a number. These numbers and what they represent are:
54: The number of songs on the box set.
69: (19)69, the year the first studio album was released.
79: (19)79, the year the last studio album was released.
(X): The sideways '8' is the mathematical symbol for infinity, representing of course, how long the music will last.
