You can test out editing in the sandbox if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the forums is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals. Some ideas for contributions

Hi Dave, welcome aboard CZ. Ruth has already given you some hints as to how things work here in general, and I wish to add some more practical hints on what possibilities you have to contribute. For a start, I just took some of the keywords from the information you supplied upon registration, and display below the current state of related CZ articles (for icon documentation, see Template:Rpl/Doc):

•  Science: The organized body of knowledge based on non–trivial refutable concepts that can be verified or rejected on the base of observation and experimentation ^[e]
• Scientist: A person employing the scientific method to gather information about a system of interest; often used in the narrow sense of people engaged with natural sciences. ^[e]
•  Research: Add brief definition or description
•  University: A type of institution that provides higher or tertiary education. ^[e]
•  Microbiology: The study of microorganisms (overlapping with areas of virology, bacteriology, mycology, and parasitology). ^[e]
• Faculty: Add brief definition or description
•  Infectious disease: In broad terms, diseases caused by living organisms; also a subspecialty of internal medicine concerned with the treatment of such diseases ^[e]

• Parasite: An organism living off another living being. ^[e]
• Cell biology: The study of the components of biological cells and their interactions. ^[e]
•  Macrophage: A type of leukocyte (i.e., white blood cells) that is associated with chronic inflammatory response. It digests foreign cells using the mechanism of phagocytosis, and both circulates in the blood, but later attaches to tissue as a part of local immune response. ^[e]
